Butchers Block Wire Brush
- Type
- Block wire brush
- Bristles
- Flat metal blades
- Use
- Descaling shoes at the forge
The butchers block wire brush is the traditional farrier's pattern of descaling brush, fitted with flat metal blades rather than the round wire bristles found on general-purpose brushes. The blades bite into forge scale far more effectively than bristles, making short work of cleaning up shoes during shoemaking and modification at the anvil. A compact block format sits comfortably in the hand and keeps the blades square to the work, so scale can be cleared from the branches, fullering and nail holes quickly between heats. This is a workshop brush for steel, and is not intended for use on the horse's hoof.
