The Werkman Orthokit 1.0 gives the working farrier an effective and straightforward means of turning standard Werkman horseshoes into a range of therapeutic shoes. Rather than carrying a full inventory of bar shoes, the farrier welds the appropriate Ortho-Kit insert into a regular shoe to build the modification required for the case in hand. The kit was developed from a comprehensive scientific study launched in June 2013, funded by Werkman and led by Dr. Jenny Hagen of the Veterinary-Anatomical Institute at Leipzig University. The study examined the impact of various horseshoes and shoeing modifications across diverse soil types on the distribution of vertical compressive forces on the hoof, the size of the load-bearing area, the gait pattern and the orientation of the phalanges, and its results informed the design of the insert system. Orthokit 1.0 covers the core therapeutic patterns: egg bar, heart bar, straight bar and straight bar performance, plus wide toe and wide branch modifications. The egg bar, heart bar, straight bar and performance bar inserts can also be easily modified into an open-toe shoe, and the kit is additionally available in aluminium. Refill sets for individual insert types are available separately.
